She was born April 26, 1941 in Presque Isle, ME to Elra M. Buck and Evelyn (McPherson) Buck of West Chapman, ME. Kathy graduated from Mapleton High School in 1958 and Farmington State Teacher's College in 1962. She pursued a career in teaching Home Economics retiring in 2001 after 34 years in the classroom. The final 18 years of her teaching career were at Deering High School where she received the USM Russell Award for Teacher Excellence.
Kathy met Phil Lucas while attending a teacher's convention and they were married on August 23, 1964. After moving to Portland, they raised four children together: Kristopher, April, Bethany, and Shareen. Always an active participant in her children's lives, she volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and Sunday School teacher. Attendance at sporting events and extracurricular activities of her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews brought her great joy. She was a member of Woodfords Congregational Church (United Church of Christ), Maine Education Association, and National Education Association.
Kathy was a kind, welcoming person with a great smile. Her smile greeted all with warmth and acceptance. Kathy will be remembered for being a most loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. One of her favorite sayings, which she lived by was, "Live Well, Laugh Often, Love Much."
She was predeceased by her parents, brothers Maxwell and Merlyn Buck, and a granddaughter Ariana Boyle.
She is survived by her husband, Philip; son, Kristopher Lucas and his wife Kathleen of Falmouth, ME; daughters April Boyle and her husband Steven of White River Junction, VT; Bethany Lucas of Reston, VA and Shareen Lucas and her husband Matthew Dulac of Exeter, NH; grandchildren Kyle and Caroline Lucas, Meredith and Elise Boyle, Mylo Haugh, Maya Lucas, Will, Charlie, Sam, and Madeline Dulac; sisters Janet Braley of Waldoboro, ME and Marjorie (John) Seiler of Oakfield, ME. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends and family are invited to attend a time of visitation on Thursday, August 4, 2016 from 4:00P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Jones-Rich-Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, ME 04103. A funeral will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Friday August 5th, 2016 at the Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodfords St., Portland.
