Scarborough- Jeanne Estelle McKenney Mayberry died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on December 2, 2010. Jeanne was born on May 21, 1923 in Belfast Maine to Roland and Ida McKenney. She married Gerald Ellis Mayberry on June 18, 1950, at the Methodist church in Old Town, Maine.
Jeanne was a lovely lady who always was giving and thinking of others. When her brother was in grade school he admired a bicycle in the window of the local hardware store, but realized it was beyond his parents’ budget. Jeanne arranged for the owner of the store to place it on layaway until she paid for the bike from her part-time job. She was delighted by his joy whenever he rode it.
Jeanne excelled in school graduating with honors from Old Town High School in 1940 and gave her classes’ graduation address. She was an officer of the Order Of The Eastern Star and an active member of the Methodist church serving in many leadership roles. Jeanne cherished her role as a mother raising her two boys and displayed endless patience by tolerating their adventures and misdeeds. She supported their education acting as the elementary school classroom mother. The students eagerly
awaited the holiday season when she baked her famous frosted Christmas cookies for their classes.
Once her children were grown she focused on mastering ballroom dancing and on any occasion when a band was present, Jeanne and Gerry inevitably entertained the crowd with their gracefulness and agility.
She is survived by her husband Gerald of 60 years, her two sons, Glen and his wife Sheila of Portland ME and Kevin of Boothbay Harbor, ME; 4 grandchildren Matthew Tyler, Sierra, Marina and Mikayla; A brother, Jaye McKenney and his wife Shirley of Punta Gorda, FL and Lamoine, ME, nephews Larry, Timothy and Andy; and nieces Candace, Mary and Cheryl.
