Fred was born in Sanford, on Sept. 11, 1933, to Ruth Elizabeth and Arthur Preston Nutter.
Fred grew up in Alfred and graduated from Sanford High School in 1951.
After high school Fred entered the U.S. Navy, participating in the Korean War conflict. Following his four years of service to our country, Fred attended Emerson College in Boston, Mass. There, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Journalism in 1959. Upon graduation, Fred began his broadcasting career at WSME Radio in Sanford, and later moved onto WPOR Radio in Portland.
In 1965 Fred joined WCSH Radio and quickly transitioned into television embarking on a vast on-air news career. He began by covering Portland City Hall, later the State House and then became the nightly news anchor. Fred was promoted to News Director at WCSH-TV, Channel 6 in 1976, culminating in his retirement from the station as Editorial Director in 2009.
Fred was active in the Portland Public School's PTO, area youth sports programs, and umpired Little League baseball and softball. He was also very involved with the Deering High School Marching Band and Deering High School athletics as a booster for both. For many years Fred was a popular MC for the Maine State Marching Band competitions. Fred very much enjoyed attending sporting events and other activities in which his children and grandchildren participated.
In 1973, Fred made his first of many family trips to Walt Disney World in Florida; his favorite vacation spot. He also enjoyed his summers by spending weekends at Parsons and Wells Beach where he shared his love of the ocean with his wife and children.
Fred is survived by his wife 55 years, Joan Elizabeth Stubbs Nutter of Portland, and their three children; Edward A. Nutter of Westbrook and wife Andrea Lekousi Nutter, their three children Nicole, Michael, and Catherine; Robert F. Nutter Sr. of Cumberland and his wife Melissa Wheeler Nutter, their three children Robert Jr., Jonathan, and Sarah, and; Susan E. Nutter of Portland and her three children Victoria, Joseph, and Nicholas. Fred is also survived by his sister, Florence Nutter Brown, and her husband Ramon Brown of Seattle, Wash.

Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. A Celebration of Fred's life will be held Friday March 4, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Woodfords Congregational Church with Rev. James Fletcher officiating.
