She was born in Farmington, but spent most of her childhood in Auburn, where she graduated from Edward Little High School.
She attended University of Maine in Orono where she was a member of Tri Delta sorority and was named as a member of All Maine Women. In 1945 “Dottie” graduated from the University with a degree in home economics. During her time at Orono she shared rides back home to Auburn with a casual friend from high school, Bob Dutton. They fell deeply in love and married in Auburn in 1946. After Bob graduated from Orono the couple moved to the Portland area. Daughter Pam was born in 1951 and Nancy in 1953. During the next several decades Dottie was active in Woodfords Congregational Church, Woman’s Woodfords Club and the University of Maine alumni chapter in Portland.
From 1967 to 1980 she taught home economics at Portland’s Lyman Moore Jr. High School, describing her work there as challenging and enjoyable. Most of her adult life Dot was a homemaker and as she described on a biography questionnaire in 1985, she “loved it”. Dorothy enjoyed water skiing, swimming, dancing, downhill skiing, playing bridge, golfing and was the champion of horseshoes up at camp.
Her immediate family was close-knit. Everyday life was happy and at times comical, and the time spent together never seemed long enough. Happy memories included living at the camp on Highland Lake, staying weekends in the winter at Carrabassett Valley with Aunt Bev, Uncle Bob, Donny and Carol, playing badminton in the backyard at camp and driving around every Christmas Eve after church to look at Christmas lights. Pam and Nancy could not have imagined a better childhood than the one their parents created.
Dorothy’s family wants to express their gratitude for the kind care she received during the year she stayed at Foreside Harbor, the thirteen years she lived at home and the eleven months she spent at Falmouth by the Sea. We understand and appreciate the effort and the love that was put into their caregiving.
Dorothy and Bob were predeceased by their daughter Pamela in 1996. Bob died in August, 2006. Surviving family members include their daughter Nancy, grandchildren Ben Drury, Jana (Drury) Zwetsloot, and Christopher Raney. Dorothy is also survived by her “little sister” Beverly Smith, nephew Don Smith and niece Carol (Smith) Klatt.
