Dominic was born on September 13, 1928 in Portland, the third son of the late Octavio and Adelaide (Colucci) DiMatteo. He attended local schools in Portland and later served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War exercising amphibious vehicle landing operations from 1950 to 1952. Upon his honorable discharge, Dominic married the love of his life, Maria Fasulo on October 16, 1954. Together they raised three children in South Portland.
Dominic was a private man who found enjoyment in the simple pleasures of life. Practicing his religious faith, he was a devoted husband and a faithful provider to his three children throughout his life. Family and friends were important to him and he would lend his hand when called upon. He worked endlessly tinkering on his house and vehicles to provide for his family over the years.The son of an Italian immigrant, Dominic enjoyed reminiscing over his early years living in Portland’s ‘Little Italy’ section of Munjoy Hill. Dominic worked at several jobs during his lifetime including Burnham and Morrill, DiMatteo’s Grocery Store on Munjoy Hill and most recently retiring from the United States Postal Service in the early 90’s.
Dominic was very talented in the construction field. He built a family camp at Sebago Lake in the late 60’s and later a house for his wife in the early 80’s in Portland. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, bocce and was quite accomplished in the art of pencil drawing besides being a skilled pool player. He was a member of The Italian Heritage Center for many years.
He was predeceased by his parents and wife along with his three brothers Rocco, Samuel and Recardo. He is survived by his three children: a son Dominic (Paul) wife Maureen of South Portland, a daughter Laura husband Michael of Pennsylvania, a daughter Donna of North Carolina and a granddaughter Jennifer husband Robbie of Ohio along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The DiMatteo family would like to thank the entire staff at Birchwood’s for their superb care given to him, the entire hospice medical and care team at Northern Lights, Dr. Fraser at InterMed and a heartfelt thank you to Iris Micucci for her loving care and affection given to him throughout the later years of his life.
Dom will be dearly missed by his family and friends but will be missed the most by the author of this obituary, his son.
A visitation celebrating Dominic’s life will be held on Friday October 28th from 4:00 to 7:00pm at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St, Portland ME. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday October 29th at 11:00am at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Ave. Portland Me. Followed by military honors and a committal service at New Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
