She attended Bangor public schools graduating from Bangor High School in 1943. Following high school, she then went on to earn her beautician’s license. Mrs. Tarkinson had been a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader and had been active with the Portland schools PTA. She had been a long time member of the Riverside and Purpooduck Golf Clubs and bowled at the Big 20 Bowling Lanes in Scarborough for several years. A 60 year member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Portland, Barbara was extremely active with the Alter Guild, devoting countless hours volunteering and providing her assistance on various activities. She was an avid bridge player, a member of the Summit Community Club and during her winters in Florida, was active with the Lake Clarke Gardens community in Lake Worth, Florida. She loved traveling with her late husband Charlie and was a very devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and sister.
She was predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Charles G. Tarkinson who died March 22, 2013 and by her brother, Morton A. Billings. She is survived her daughter, Linda J. Carey and her husband Dale Rouisse of Old Orchard Beach, her son, Charles G. Tarkinson, Jr. and his wife Nancy of Scarborough; son Alan R. Tarkinson and his wife Ruth of Gorham; daughter Janet E. Totaro and her husband Raymond of Medfield, Ma; her sister, Glenna B. Adams of Hallowell in addition to her 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends may call at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, Sunday, from 5-7 PM. A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 am at Trinity Episcopal Church corner of Forest Ave and Coyle St., Portland. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Falmouth.
