John Stanley “Jack” Carrel, age 92 and 8 months, died July 1, 2012. Mr. Carrel was born October 12, 1919 in Newark, N.J. to the late William and May Marie (Flynn) Carrel. He served on an aircraft carrier in the Pacific during WWII. Upon discharge from the Navy he returned to his Civilian Air Force position and worked in various U.S. locations, retiring in 1972. He was a licensed private pilot and enjoyed playing golf well into his 90’s. He was a member of both Indigo Golf Course and Spruce Creek Golf Course and made a hole-in one at both courses. He served on the Board of Directors at Spruce Creek Golf course for two years. Mr. Carrel was a 53 year member of Unity Lodge 95 and a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry in the Valley of Memphis Orient of Tennessee, and also a member of the VFW, Post 3282. He was a HAM radio operator maintaining contacts throughout the world using call sign K4IKC. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Marta Carrel of Daytona Beach. His three sisters preceded him in death, as did his first wife, Margaret Carrel. Mr. Carrel is survived by son, John Carrel, Jr. and his wife Mary of Dunnellon, Fl.: daughter Wendy Moore and her husband Alex of Stuart, FL; and daughter Chris Urban and her husband Larry of N. Chelmsford, MA. Also surviving are grandsons John Carrel III, Alex Moore III and Ted Urban; and granddaughters Meridith Brady, Katy Urban and Karen Urban. In addition Mr. Carrel is survived by his brother William Carrel of Miamisburg, OH, 7 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Florida Hospital and Florida Hospital Hospice Care for their medical expertise and compassion to our beloved husband and father. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday July 5, 2012 at Volusia Memorial FH 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd. Port Orange. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 am prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Halifax Humane Society, 2364 W. LPGA Blvd., Daytona Beach, FL or Florida Hospital Hospice Care, 770 West Granada Blvd., Suite 304, Ormond Beach.
