Jimmy was born on February 23,1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Dan and Mary (Williams) Powers. Following high school graduation, Jimmy served in both the US Navy and Air Force, later becoming a commercial airline pilot. Captain Powers flew for Piedmont Airlines and US Air. Following his retirement from US Air, Jimmy joined EVA Airways(Taiwan) in 1995, retiring from flying in 2002. Jimmy later served as Chief Instructor at Epic Flight Academy, as well as Check Instructor at L3 Harris Technologies until the time of his illness. In 2011, Jimmy received the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award for over 50 years of contribution to aviation safety.
Jimmy enjoyed connecting with family and friends, traveling, football, photography and skiing. His generous nature and quick wit will be dearly missed by all who love him.
Jimmy is survived by wife Wendy Powers, daughters Malinda Alderman (John) of Nottingham, PA, Casey Powers of Winston-Salem, NC, Cindy Patterson (Christian) of Arlington, VA, and son Dr. Kevin Powers of Daytona Beach; Grandchildren D. Austin Sloan of Astoria, NY, Connor (Justin) Shiffert of Barto, PA, Andrew Alderman of Greeley, CO, Leslie (Evan) Hess of Quarryville, PA; Great-grandchildren, Vera and Violet Shiffert and Dakota Hess. Also, surviving are siblings Pamela Dorgay (Jeff) of Vancouver, WA, and John North of Gresham, OR, niece Armay Best of Portland, OR, and nephews Stone Best of Vancouver, WA and Donald James Chesney Jr. (Karen) of Auburn CA. Jimmy was predeceased by his parents and brother Donald James Chesney, Sr.
A Gathering of Friends and Family will be held Saturday, June 24th from 1p-3p at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home - Port Orange, 4815 S. Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange with the Rendering of Military Honors and a Celebration of Life beginning at 2:15pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Jimmy’s name to Halifax Humane Society.
