Elizabeth “Betty” Olen, born on December 13th, 1932 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island to Albert & Loretta Goodrich, left for Heaven on Saturday June 18th, 2016 from Halifax Health Hospice Center in Port Orange, FL. Preceded in death by a son, Floyd Olen, Betty is survived by her son, Milton “Buddy” (his wife Kathleen Windridge) Olen of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two grandsons, Olaf (his wife Ursula) Olen of Davie, FL & Wings (his wife Angela) Olen of Glendale, AZ; two great grandchildren, Kilian & Sienna Olen (children of Olaf and Ursula), and a brother, Henry “Hank” (his wife Bonnie) Goodrich, Port Orange FL.
Betty and her previous husband, who worked for the U.S. State Department, traveled to a few foreign countries – Germany, Chile, and Ghana, Africa – while in the Diplomatic Corps. In 1964, Betty decided to go back to school and obtain her real estate license and became an award winning realtor in the Washington/Virginia area for over 20 years, where she was once honored as the number one realtor out of 7,000 before moving to Sarasota, FL to continue her real estate career as a broker/realtor. Betty really enjoyed living on Lido Key, right on the Gulf of Mexico, enjoying the beach, boating, offshore racing, and all the other events offered in Sarasota. Having founded Mount Vernon Realty, opening its first signature building in 1986 as principal broker/co-owner, Betty was selected for the 21st edition of Marquis “Who’s Who in the South & Southwest” in 1987, and again received recognition in 1988, when she was chosen to join the over 21,000 US Women listed since 1899 in the “Who’s Who of American Women.” In 2004, Betty had completed over 40 years in real estate sales, and was honored by the National Association of Realtors with the designation of “Realtor Emeritus”. Betty retired in 2013 and relocated to Port Orange, FL to be close to her brother Henry and make for an easy drive for her son Buddy and family members to visit her in Country Side Lakes, a wonderful independent living facility in Port Orange, FL. Betty enjoyed her new life there with her true love, “Ziggy”, a beautiful Pomeranian who passed 2 months prior at age 12 and will be with Betty forever.
A Celebration of Life for Betty will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 11am at Shannon Maloney Funeral Home, 4084 Halifax Dr., Port Orange FL 32127. In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange FL 32129 in Betty’s name.
