David C. Achilles, 77.of South Daytona passed away, December 23, 2016. David was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, son of Carlton and Olive Achilles. He was raised on the family dairy farm in Waterford, VT, and he always said it was a great place to grow up. He attended a one-room schoolhouse until the 8th grade and graduated in 1957 from St. Johnsbury Trade School, and in 1962 received his BSEE from the University of Vermont. David started working for General Electric in Burlington, VT, and transferred to Daytona Beach to work on the Apollo Program in 1963. In 1970, he and General Electric registered a patent related to the Apollo Program. In June 1969, he earned his Florida Professional Engineering License and in 1972 earned a construction degree from DBCC (Daytona State). He was a Certified General Contractor in this area for 25 years. From 1986 through 1990 he was an instructor at DBCC in Electronics and Building Construction. David was also a State Licensed Building Official and was Chief Building Official for 10 years in South Daytona. After retiring, David volunteered in South Daytona Citizens Alert for 10 years. He was a kind and gentle man with a heart as big as all outdoors and a ready smile for everyone. He enjoyed walking, Word Search, John Deere tractors, telling funny stories, and maple walnut ice cream. Over the years he took care of his dachshunds - Snoopy, Lucy, Peppermint Patti, and currently MarcieJade. There were always several projects in process and several more being planning.
David married his wife Marcella in 1966 and they would have celebrated their 51st anniversary in January 2017. In addition to his wife Marcella, David is survived by his brother Sidney (Marjorie), St. Johnsbury, VT, sisters Edna McClellan, Winter Park, FL, and Sally, Winter Springs, FL. Also, brothers-in-law Bill (Dorise), Franklin, TN, Walt (Linda), Austin, TX, and Dick (Paula), Atlanta, GA. Box 2283, Inverness, FL 34451-2283. A memorial service is planned for 1:00 pm , Saturday January 7, 2017 at Volusia Memorial Funeral Home 4815 S. Clyde Morris Blvd, Port Orange.
