Savas Soliz, 93, of Port Lavaca passed away April 11, 2018. He was born January 14, 1925 in Austwell to Francisco and Elodia Soliz. He worked for Alcoa and retired after 39 ½ years of service. Savas was a member of the Alcoa 25 year Club and he will forever be the reigning champ of “The Billiards Club”.
Our family’s deepest appreciation to Paul and Doris Guzman and the entire staff at El Patio for honoring him with his “special dining spot” and taking care of him. It meant everything to Daddy and all of us that you treated him so special every time he came by.
Daddy knew no strangers because everyone was his friend - so many friends in the community and many friends in Victoria, Austwell, Tivoli, and Corpus Christi. He adored and loved his kids and his grandchildren and was the happiest man who lived life to the fullest. He loved traveling with his beloved grandchildren. He travelled to Jamaica, Cabo San Lucas, Cancun - not only once but twice, and went deep sea fishing for marlin off the coast of Cancun. He loved going to San Antonio for family vacations and Sandcrab games. He went river fishing in Arkansas, Colorado and travelled to Chicago. If he wasn’t visiting “Carrie’s Diner”, he would be playing dominoes or shootin’ pool.
Not only was Daddy the ultimate fisherman, but he loved nature. He loved his trips to the Wildlife Refuge, enjoyed the peace and solace sitting at the “The Bench” at the bayfront. In his younger days, he was quite the hunter - hogs, deer and geese. We all worried about eating his “mystery meat” for it could have been some kind of “roadkill”.
We will all miss his countless sayings that we will forever hold in our memories and hearts. “You made my day”,“let’s get the show on the road!”, singing “I owe my soul to the company store”, and the most special greeting on his phone which says “call me later, I got a big fish on my line”.
He is survived by his children, Isabel Sandoval, David Soliz (Josie), Christina Daspit (David), Edward Soliz (Sandy), Phillip Soliz (Esther), Rita Burke (Stephen), Carlos Soliz (Norma) and Abel Soliz (Alice); daughter-in-law, Norma L. Soliz; brothers, Abel Solis (Aurora), Cosme Soliz; 26 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 67 years, Carmen Martinez Soliz; son, Ruben Soliz; parents; sisters, Bertha S. Jimenez, Isabel Alvarez, Francisca Camacho, Guadalupe Cortez, Trinidad Gonzales and Felicita Soliz; and brothers, Amado S. Solis, Cecilio Solis, Amadeo Soliz, Tiburcio Soliz and Pedro Soliz.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 16, 2018 from 3-7 pm with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Richardson-Colonial Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church with Father Tommy Chen officiating. Burial will follow in Port Lavaca Cemetery. Daddy’s farewell reception will be at the VFW Hall.
Pallbearers are Phillip Soliz, Jose Sandoval, David Scott Soliz, Jacob Burke, Jonathan Burke and Matthew Daspit.
Honorary Pallbearers are Javier Sandoval, Isaac Sandoval, Ross Soliz, Ruben Erik Soliz, Justin Burke and Zachary Soliz and all of his nephews that he loved and adored.
We are so blessed and thankful to our Almighty Father for this wonderful father, friend, and grandpa in our lives. He will be forever missed, but we know that he has gone to reunite with Mom and his son Ruben.
