She was the kind of grandmother you read about in stories but who actually existed with all the sweetness you could hope for as a child. Some of my favorite memories from my childhood come from the times we spent visiting them. I remember sitting with her at the dining room table watching Wheel of Fortune (she loved crossword puzzles) and having liverwurst sandwiches (before I found out what that was! :) She also had a great sense of humor and was always warm, I never saw her angry. I would run around her house when we arrived looking for the little dishes of candy, usually there was one on top of the organ she would play. The candy jar in the downstairs room was exactly as you would expect from a grandmother, filled with hard candy that was stuck together in a giant mass. Every birthday I got a card with a check, and I do mean every birthday from as far back as I can remember to even just a year ago. She got to meet my son Samuel recently, a blessing as he got a little taste of the love and kindness she shared with me my entire life.

Ruth and Walter were such dear friends. I can still remember our day in the summer going to Jean and Bob's Mattituck house, and all the cooked chickens. Also, those crazy New Year's Eve parties with you kids sleeping upstairs with snacks. Also, the summer BBQs. What wonderful, wonderful memories to have.

I am so sorry to hear of Ruth's passing. She will be surely misses but she will be with her beloved Walter again. I'm thinking back in our lives, we were friends since September 1945 when we entered Hofstra College. The many years we have had as our family's grew.

Ruth's passing is more than sad in that she radiated unselfishness and love to all who knew her - she will be missed by all.

Hello my dear Uncle Walter,

I was sorry to hear that your mother passed away.  I always thought she was a cool lady based on the interaction I had with her at your parties for Easter or the 4th of July.  I hope you were able to say all the things you wanted to say to each other, in the best case many times over, so as to improve on the first draft!  I also hope you were and are able to surround yourself with people who love you and enjoy the unusually good human closeness that follows something sad.

In any case I look forward to our next meeting and to helping you plan the best damned party Heritage Park has ever seen.

Some of my favorite memories of Gammy are from our annual visits up the east coast with my parents growing up. We used to drive from wherever we lived in the country at the time and would stay for a week or more at mom's childhood home with Gammy and Grandpa. The house always seemed so big and full of wonder growing up. I recall staying the guest room on the lower floor with grandpa's workshop nearby. Gammy would play music on the organ and we'd spend a great deal of time hanging out by the pool, followed by great meals. Our cousins, aunts and uncle would be part of the visit and a great time was had by all. Visits during the winter months were a bit rarer, but I recall the decorations filling the house outside and in, with the bubble lights on the tree. Gammy would always call on my birthday and was very committed to getting us together as a group, as dramatically evidenced by the massive logistical challenge of bringing the entire family to Wexford, Ireland in 2006.

Gammy -- I will always remember your love of music and how you taught me to play the organ by writing numbers on the keys, how you would make me a separate lasagna for dinner because I didn't like meat in the sauce and I would always look forward to our trips to McDonald's when you would babysit! We had so much fun playing in your living room on Library Lane - both with the "little people" and riding on Grandpa, while he was pretending to be a horse!  I will miss you so much... <3 always, Katie

To my fun, loving, 'Gushy' Gammy, I always enjoyed spending time with you playing Caught in the Kitchen, Yahtzee, and board games. So many memories from Library Lane and I have to agree with Jack - you always said 'yes'! I couldn't ask for a better grandmother and I will truly miss you. Say hi to Grandpa for me, I know you are happy to be together with him again. Love always, Mel

Linda and I only met Ruth once, at Mary Ellen and Andrew's engagement party, but she made a memorable impression on us. We had a terrific conversation with her - smart, interesting, engaging.  She was so vibrant & full of life even though sitting in a wheelchair.  Our thoughts are with you.




Ruth was a good friend---we spent many an afternoon reminiscing
about old times and bragging about our mutual grand daughters.
Our lives seemed to parallel each others and we had so much in common.  She was a worthy Scraabble opponent too!

Ruth was a wonderful mother-in-law - supportive, thoughtful and fun.  She called me her "daughter-in-love" instead of just her daughter-in-law, and she truly was my "mother-in-love" too!

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

July 4th on Library Lane always meant a bountiful BBQ in the Beckers' yard with all our neighbors.  Mr. Becker showcased his gardening talents, encouraged us to swim in the pool, and taught the kids culinary tricks for the best BBQ.  Ms. Becker baked her Irish soda bread and led us all in a standing salute with the singing of "God Bless America."  Lots of laughs, lots of fun, lots of wonderful memories!   May she rest in peace! Mrs. Becker helped create some of my best childhood memories, especially at Christmas time. I always remember her as a very warm and loving person.  She will be missed but never forgotten.  Sending love and condolences to the Becker family from all the Abbamontes.
