Sandra Jean Bekar, a pillar of strength and love, passed away peacefully on June 24th, 2024, surrounded by her devoted family. She was born June 1st 1952 in the old St Mary’s hospital in New Westminster, British Columbia, and grew up in Burnaby, where she attended Burnaby South Secondary School alongside her sister Elaine, both excelling in athletics. In 1972, Sandra met the love of her life, Dale, and their union blossomed into a beautiful marriage on May 25th, 1973. Together, they shared 51 years of unwavering love and companionship. A dedicated mother, Sandra poured her heart into raising her two sons and one daughter with boundless love and affection. She coached her daughter in basketball and ringette, and never missed a hockey or lacrosse game for the boys. She was more than a supporter; she was deeply involved in every activity and sport her children pursued, extending her dedication through their college careers and beyond.
Her commitment took her around the world, ensuring she was always there to cheer them on. Her love and dedication extended well beyond her immediate family, being known as a second mom to many of her children’s friends. Her home was always open and was a gathering place for many. Affectionately known as "hockey Grandma" Sandra showered her six beautiful grandchildren with endless love, humor, and kindness. Famous for her lasagna and chocolate chip cookies, she made sure there was always an abundance of both whenever the grandkids came to visit.
Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at the early age of 52, Sandra faced this challenge with remarkable courage and grace. Throughout the 20 years she battled the disease, she never once complained or allowed it to hinder her zest for life. She remained determined to live her best life and to always be there for her family, never letting the disease define her, whether she was on the court with her grandkids, in the kitchen cooking, celebrating and dressing up for every holiday. Sandra will forever be remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother, cherished grandma, and a beacon of strength and positivity to all who knew her. Her legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering support will continue to inspire and guide her family and friends.
Sandra leaves behind her husband Dale, three children Derek (Shanna), Jillian (Darren), David (Danielle), six grandchildren, Jada, Drake, Aubrey, Dax, Lachlan and Crew. A private family celebration to take place. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations be made to the Parkinson's Society of British Columbia www.parkinson.bc.ca.
