Albert Swash, 102, of Maple Ridge Seniors Village, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024. Albert was born on February 17, 1922 to parents, Ernest and Florence in Chelmsford, Essex, England. After Albert graduated from Moulsham Street Elementary School in 1936 at the age of 14, Albert went on to volunteer for the Royal Marines in 1940 and engaged in full service, stationed in North Africa till 1954.
While during the war he met his first love and wife, Iris Davies of Cromer and married her in Norwich, England in 1947. They emigrated to Canada in 1954 where Albert enlisted with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signal from 1954 -1972 in Kingston, Ontario. He served in Egypt and Germany as a cryptographer and was discharged in 1972. Albert then moved and served as a civilian as a Communications Supervisor in the Halifax Dockyard. (1972-1984) Once Albert retired, he and Iris chose to move to a warmer climate and settled in Cobble Hill, then Ladysmith, B.C. on Vancouver Island.
With much sorrow his beloved Iris of 51 years passed in 1998. Without Iris, Albert felt lost and was encouraged to write about it to help with his grief. He proceeded to write a book called Grief is a Shadow: A Biography of My Love and was published in 2000, and again in 2020, an updated version called The Undetermined Denial.
He met Enid Slater later in 1999 whilst looking for someone to edit his book. They had been both early adopters of the internet and they cordially exchanged a remote dialogue about the subject material. Enid, living in Chilliwack and widow herself, could relate and the conversations became broader leading to eventual companionship and matrimony in 2013. The years with Enid was a happy renewal for Albert and they enjoyed adventures together with the time that retirement affords.
Albert will be remembered as gentleman who was curious, respectful, appreciative and grateful. One could be certain your visit, your call, your concerns was met with genuine joy and sincerity. He could exchange easily with others, even managing technical communication through his late years. In short, he was a remarkable man, loved and will be missed.
Albert was predeceased by his first wife Iris (1998), 2nd wife Enid (2015) and brother Jeffrey. He is survived by his stepson Alan Slater, his companion Marie Spibey, niece Jayne Mason and nephew Stephen Swash. Special mention to the many visits and friendship of the Sandwell family. Much appreciated has been the care and comfort the staff have given Albert over the past 12 years as a resident of Maple Ridge Seniors Village.
