James C Russ

James C. Russ, 89, Port Charlotte, FL, passed away March 21, 2023. Born July 18, 1933, In Wilmington, NC, Jim graduated from Jacksonville (FL) University and earned a Masters Degree from Florida State University in Vocational Counseling. He served in the U. S. Army in Germany. Jim retired from State of Florida, Disability Determination. He relished every opportunity to help those in need to obtain benefits. During this time, the family lived in Jacksonville, Hollywood and Tallahassee.

Jim was predeceased by his parents W. Clinton and Bessie Pope Russ and his brother W. C. (Bill) Russ. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years and caregiver Sybel, his son James Russ, Jr., and wife Cheryl, and his daughter Teresa Winer and husband Matt. His legacy also includes grandchildren Jared Russ and wife Ana, Stephen Russ, Kelly Winer Takacs and husband Brett, Christy Winer, Jonathan Winer, and great-granddaughter Haley Takacs.

To know Jim was to know that he loved God, family and country. He enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, traveling, beachcombing, and thift store shopping. Wherever his lived, he interacted with wildlife, notably birds, racoons and foxes.

Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. David’s Episcopal Church, Englewood, FL, or to a charity of your choice.
