William was born on November 28, 1912, in Ragley, Louisiana to Cynthia Jackson Smith and John Smith. He had lived in Port Arthur since 1929 and was a pipefitter, welder and construction worker for Local #195 for over fifty years where he was named a lifetime and honorary member. William was a member of the Knights of Columbus #1304 in Port Arthur, a member of St. James Catholic Church where he also served as an usher. He loved to tinker with things, often picking up things on the side of the road, fixing them and giving them to a family member or friend. William loved to garden and spend time with his family who he loved so dearly.
William is survived by his wife of seventy-six years, Ola DeVille Smith of Port Arthur; daughters, Judy Badeaux and her husband E.J. of Port Arthur and Linda Thomson and her husband Johnny of Hockley, Texas; sister, Georgia Lee Laviolette of Newton, Texas; grandchildren, Angela Richter-Gronross, Jerry Smith, Troy Thomson, Amy DeJean, Cindy Bolt, Troy Badeaux and Danny Badeaux; great grandchildren, Kirk, Shelbie, Jaden and Alexis.
William was preceded in death by his parents, John and Cynthia Smith; son, James “Jimmy” L. Smith; grandchildren, Jim Smith and Jada Richter.
A gathering of friends and family will take place from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home in Port Arthur with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at St. James Catholic Church in Port Arthur with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Port Arthur.
