She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, George Sim; daughters Cheryl Sim and Anita Grubisich (Lance); grandchildren Carly Vesaranta (Jesse), Erik Vesaranta (Audrey), Ashley Grubisich (Colten), Joelene Grubisich (Kerrick) and great grandson August James Neuwirth. She was predeceased by her parents Ragnar and Olga Nelson.
Sonja was born in Dawson City, Yukon and later moved to Vancouver so she could experience life in the big city. She was employed by a government pharmacy for several years before meeting her future husband George on a visit to Port Alberni to see her mother. On April 1, 1961 they were married in Port Alberni and this is where they stayed to raise their family.
Sonja worked for Woodwards store in several different departments and stayed with the store until its closure. Mom loved her work and enjoyed meeting many people during her time there. During her retirement years Mom and Dad enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren and family and she was thrilled to be able to spend time with her great grandson. Mom and Dad could often be seen enjoying their daily coffee and muffin at McDonalds. Sonja was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be missed by us all. As per Mom’s wishes no service will be held.
The family would like to thank the amazing nurses, care aides and staff at Rainbow Gardens for the exceptional care that was given to Mom during her time there.
