Betty passed away on June 29, 2024, while residing at ECHO VILLAGE CARE home, at the age of 86 years. She was born September 26, 1937 in Port Alberni, to parents Stanley and Lila Taylor. She was the eldest of three children, with sister Ilene and brother Dean.
She left school in grade 8 to work at the family flower shop and greenhouses. In 1955. She traveled to California alone to study floral design, receiving a diploma in floral design.
In the early 60’s, Betty met the love of her life, Walter, getting married on April 28, 1962. As a couple, they welcomed three adopted children into their family and continued living an adventurous life. Travel was always the path to adventure, with trips close to home like Taylor Flats or a creek near any old logging road. Longer trips included vacations in the Kootenay’s to visit family and trips to California and Florida.
For over 40 years, Betty worked and owned Taylor’s Flower Shop. The people making arrangements and delivering flowers became family for mom. She had close bonds with these people for years.
Later in life, Betty sold the flower shop and went into retirement. Not a person to sit still, she filled her time by volunteering. She volunteered at Ty Watson House and Fir Park Village and also, was deeply involved with the Port Alberni Cancer Agency. She enjoyed very much being involved with the Ambassador program, greeting visitors in Cathedral Grove or on the Frances Barkley going to Uclulet.
Betty is survived by her son Terry (Mitsuyo), daughter-in-law Bev, daughter Juli (Daryl) , grandsons Matthew and Josh. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, Walter, her son Kelly, her sister Ilene, and her brother Dean.
Betty will be interred next to her husband at the Alberni Valley Memorial Gardens and we hope to have a celebration of life on a day in September close to her birthday. She was known to host dessert parties and it seems a natural theme for a celebration of her life. The exact date and location have yet to be determined.
Our family would like to express our thanks to all who helped Betty when she was in need. The many paramedics who picked her up when she fell, her neighbours at Burde Hill Estates, and the Home Care support people who visited her daily over a period of years. Finally, most appreciatively, we would like to thank the staff at Echo Village. The strength, care, humour and love seen daily, with empathy and understanding, is so important to families like ours.
Mom is going to be upset for saying this, but in lieu of flowers, a donation to Echo Village would be a wonderful way to honour Betty's life.
We will miss you, Mom…
