Funeral Services Celebrating the Life of Nickey Reed Browning will be Friday, November 1, 2024, beginning a 2pm at West Heights Baptist Church with Elder Roger Browning, Bro. David Hamilton, and Bro. Jeff Lawrence officiating. Visitation will occur from 5pm until 9pm on Thursday and on Friday from 12pm until service time at the church. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery in New Albany.
Nickey passed away on October 29, 2024 at Sanctuary Hospice in Tupelo surrounded by his family. Born on July 19,1951 in Pontotoc to the late James and Winnie Browning, Nickey was a graduate of Ingomar High School. After high school, Nickey attended Northeast Mississippi Community College before transferring to Mississippi State University. Nickey was a respected businessman is his community, owning several businesses throughout his life with Browning Lawn Care being the last before his health declined. One of Nickey's proudest accomplishments was that he represented the people of Pontotoc and Union Counties in the Mississippi State Senate for 24 years. During his time in the Senate, Nickey served on various committees, such as Business and Financial Institutions, Drug Policy, Energy, Finance, Transportation, Insurance, and Rules. Nickey was chairman of the Senate Forestry Committee and the Senate County Affairs Committee. Nickey was a member of Bethlehem Methodist Church for over 33 years. Nickey served as the Pontotoc Red Sox American Legion Baseball Coach for over 50 years. Some of Nickey's favorite things to do were fishing, working in the yard, attending Mississippi State sporting events, as he was an avid Mississippi State fan. However, what brought Nickey the most enjoyment was spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, Nickey was preceded in death by his brother Gary Browning.
Nickey is survived by his wife, Brenda Browning; daughters Tracy Riddle and Brea Klair Browning; son, Jason Browning; sister, Nancy Yates (Hugh); brother, Roger Browning (Rebecca) and Tim Browning (Anita); sister-in law, Paula Browning; grandson, Memphis Riddle; and a host of other family and friends, especially his Pontotoc Red Sox players.
Pallbearers will be Scott Cummings, Jack Savely, Ricky Ferguson, Al Sage, Senator Dean Kirby, Senator Videt Carmichael, Senator Perry Lee, Senator Giles Ward, Vance Witt, George Rowland, Josh Dowdy, and McKinley Holland.
Honorary pallbearers will be all former and current players and coaches of Pontotoc Red Sox American Legion Baseball.
