Martha Wynn Mills

Martha White Wynn was born May 11, 1926 in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania to J. Fred Wynn and his wife Katherine Quigley Wynn. She was the middle child between two active boys, John F. Wynn and Warren Richard (Dick) Wynn. The children and their and paternal grandparents spent time at a family hunting camp in the mountains, fishing, hunting and swimming in the creek. The family always had hunting dogs and Martha was a lifelong lover of animals. She was a Girl Scout. The family went to the Presbyterian Church and Martha made a confession of her faith in Jesus Christ on April 17, 1938.

The Wynns sold their family business, moved to Fort Lauderdale and built a new family business on the beach- the Wynholm Hotel. Martha was 14 when they moved to Florida. She graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High School Class of 1944.

At Ft. Lauderdale High, Martha met Richard Charles (Dick) Mills, a native Floridian. Martha graduated from Penn Hall College and Indiana University. She majored in home economics and was a member of Tri Delta sorority. After graduation, Martha worked in Ft. Lauderdale managing the school lunch program at the local high school. She and Dick were married August 26, 1950. Two children were born of their union, Katherine Wynn Mills and Richard Charles Mills, Jr.

Martha was a stay at home mom, active in community organizations. She was a member of Chapter AH PEO (she became a 50 year PEO), DAR, Junior League, and the auxiliary of Kiwanis Club. She held leadership positions in most of these organizations. She was room mother, Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother. She was a fan of the Florida Gators. She loved to entertain and she did it without a sweat. Martha made a memorable smoked fish dip and a key lime pie (with home grown key limes) of great deliciousness. She was adored by her husband, “Marty” to her brothers, “mom” to her children, loved by her friends and her neighbors. She was “Aunt Martha” to her beloved niece and nephews.

When Kathy married Gus Burns, and Rick married Michelle Daniels, Martha became Grandma to Kate Burns and PePaw to Danielle and Richard Mills, III. She lived long enough to meet her great grandson, Richard’s son Cade.

After Dick retired, Martha and Dick travelled with a group of friends. They went out west to the Grand Canyon. They went to Egypt, and Spain. An avid reader, Martha was excited about seeing new places.

As early residents of Broward County, Martha and Dick were named Broward County Pioneers. She passed away on October 16, 2017.

Martha Wynn Mills is survived by her daughter, Katherine Mills Burns, son, Richard C. Mills, Jr. (Michelle), grandchildren, Kate Burns Winchester, Danielle Mills, and Richard C. Mills,

III, one great grandson, and many nephews, nieces and friends.
