John "Chris" Smik, age 55, Son of John and Nancy Smik, passed away Wednesday morning, February 27 at Melech Hospice House in Temple Terrace, FL
A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held at St. Clement Roman Catholic Church in Plant City on Thursday March 14 at 11:00 a.m. The Family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Church. Interment will occur the following day at Hillsboro Memorial Gardens in Brandon, FL.
Chris was born in Orlando, FL and spent a normal, energetic life until at age 10, he had an accident. Our family watched as a miracle unfolded as Chris grew into a man with special needs. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening and time spent with his sisters, Debbie, Cheryl and Nancy, as well as all family members. Chris was always cheerful and gracious, touching the lives of many by his example of selflessness, bravery and positive outlook on life.
Eleven years ago, Chris experienced a second accident that left him a quadriplegic. The road got rougher, but his outlook and determination to improve remained firm. He was an eager and active participant in Special Boy Scout Troop 399 in Brandon and enjoyed his time with this group of handicapped men. It was a joy to be in his company. His death ended months of suffering and physical deterioration.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please send donations to Ridgeland Provider Services, Inc. 2504 Culbreath Cove Ct., Valrico FL, 33596, who provided a caring group home environment for him for the last six years.
