Elmer “Ray” Simmons was born March 13, 1937, in Dover, Fl. He was the son of Alvin and Erma Rogers Simmons. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, James A. Simmons, and Charles F. Simmons.
He was a graduate of Plant City High School and Florida Southern College majoring in Citrus. He worked 31 years for the Florida Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry. He was a staff sergeant and medic in the Army Reserves, 3344th U.S. Hospital Unit for 23 years. He was a member of a Pioneer family for this area of Florida recognized by the East Hillsborough County Historical Society. He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church of Dover, accepting Christ at age 14. He was a faithful member of the choir and Sunday School teacher for many years.
Growing up on a strawberry farm he plowed with horses and mules. He enjoyed growing a large vegetable garden, caring for all kinds of various plants, and taking care of animals. He loved football, having played center for the Plant City Planters. He was a seasoned singer and ministered to many in song from weddings to funerals. He sang at Solaris and Hawthorne Rehab Centers entertaining staff while a resident there.
In 1992 Ray received a liver transplant due to an iron overload disease. For this gift of life, we give God all of the glory.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Kay Martin Simmons, son Patrick Simmons, son Matthew Simmons (Cathy), grandson Virgil Simmons, sister Louise Simmons McClelland, and many relatives and friends.

A visitation will take place on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Dover, 3223 N. Gallagher Road, Dover, Florida 33527 with a funeral service immediately following at 11:00 a.m. He will be laid to rest immediately following the service at First Baptist Church Dover Cemetery.
