On Sunday, September 29, 2024, Karen Suzanne Smith-Rosamond, quietly passed away in Princeton, Texas. Her daughter, Stephanie, and her siblings remember Karen as a “feisty” and “tenacious” lady. A lady who early on demonstrated that fighting spirit, being born 3 months prematurely on January 8, 1959, to the parentage of William and Mona Smith. As native Texan, she was born into a military family. They spent time growing up in Pennsylvania and Minnesota. They settled back in Texas in 1968 when the family purchased a home in West Plano.
While growing up, Karen, along with her siblings were tight group. So tight that teachers would often lean on siblings to help them when a sibling was having a not-so-great day in school. They were each other’s best friend. They looked out for another. When the family settled in Plano, Karen became active in the community and school. In High School, she ran track, sang in choir, and played on the Wildcat Basketball Team.
In 1977 Karen graduated from Plano High School and attended classes at Richland Junior College. Her adventurous spirit took her to Austin, TX where she got first taste of working within the legal system. She took a job with the Attorney General’s office there. That was the start of a 35-year career working as a legal assistant. She spent much of her career working with the Dallas Attorney General’s Office. While working in Dallas she became a child advocate while assisting on child support cases.
Now, Karen was not about all work and no play. She will be remembered for being the aunt who picked up her nieces and nephews to take them on trips to Alaska or to let them stay the weekend. She loved to shop. When asked did she shop at Collin Creek Mall or North Park, the answer was, “No, she was thrifty.” She was thrifty but she had an eye for designer clothes. She was always able to dress to the “T” and when she entered a room all eyes were on her. One of her sisters said, she was the beauty queen and the social butterfly in the family. She never stepped out without her hair and nails ready with red being her color of choice for her nail polish and lipstick.
Family and friends are going to miss Karen. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter Stephanie Bohannon and son-in-law, Jason Bohannon, along with their daughter Charlee Marie. Karen is survived by her siblings: Lee (Dang) Smith of Austin, TX; Timothy (Charlene) Smith of Oakdale, MN; William (Wendy) smith of Ramone, CA; Marie (James) Wooten of Plano, TX; Mona Smith-Turner of Plano, TX; Melanie Green of Durant, OK; and James (Julie) Smith of Durant, OK. Karen was preceded in death by her parents William and Mona Smith and one sister Kathleen Smith. Karen is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews, and Uncle Darrell (Alice) Harlan of Bradford, PA and Aunt Bern Swanson of Mt. Jewett, PA.
