Hannah Kathleen Montgomery, age 67, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, July 24th at her home in Plano after receiving the last rites of the Church, with her family gathered round. Hannah was born on October 4, 1942 in Waller, Texas, the daughter of Joseph Robert Kimbrough and Laura Kathleen Custer Kimbrough. She graduated from La Vega High School in Bellmead, Texas in 1960. In her teenage years, she worked for her father driving trucks and operating bulldozers and front-end loaders. On December 19, 1964 she married W.C “Monk” Montgomery in Waco, Texas.
Hannah and Monk moved to Plano in 1973. Before going to nursing school Hannah was a custom cake decorator. She made cakes of all sizes and shapes. In 1976, Hannah returned to school to pursue a degree and a career in nursing. She graduated from the Grayson County Community College of Nursing in 1978 and began her career working as an RN in the office of Plano Medical Associates. For 9 years, she helped care for the patients of Dr. Andy Lowry, Dr. Al Snider and Dr. Leo Fitzgerald. In 1989, Hannah found what many believed was her true calling, becoming a School Nurse for the Plano Independent School District. “Nurse Hannah” plied her trade at Barron, Dooley and Carlisle elementary schools where the kids went to the clinic, whether ill or not, for simple things like a hug, a peppermint, or even peanut butter and crackers. She retired in 2008 after 19 years of service to the boys and girls of the PISD.
Hannah was a great seamstress and her family depended on her to replace buttons, repair tears, and make alterations. Hannah made her daughter Debra’s wedding cake and veil when she married Mark Stevens in 1991. She always considered Mark her son. She made the family Christening gown that all of her grandchildren wore at their baptism. Each grandchild was blessed with a handmade quilt. Hannah enjoyed cooking and loved spending the holidays with her family. Her grandchildren knew her as Mom-maw. Hannah was a familiar figure at the softball field. She enjoyed traveling with her granddaughter, Kierin, to select softball games. This past season she was able to watch her granddaughter play for the Plano East Lady Panthers. Hannah was instrumental in helping her grandson, Garrett, through high school. She was looking forward to Garrett’s upcoming enlistment into the United States Air Force this September. She was a long time member of Holy Nativity Episcopal Church. She served as wedding coordinator and Parish Nurse.
Hannah is survived by her husband, Monk, daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Mark Stevens, grandchildren Garrett and Kierin Stevens, brothers Billy, David, Bobby, and sister Shirley. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday July 27th from 6-9pm with the family present from 7-8:30pm. Requiem Mass will be the following day, Wednesday July 28th at 10:30AM at the Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Plano. Presiding clergy will be The Reverend Garrin Dickinson and The Reverend John Kline. Interment will follow at the Plano Mutual Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Saul Laredo, Dr. Andrew Lowry, Ken Batzler, Bryan Davis, Chris Dunkle and Ronald Montgomery. Those wishing to honor Hannah’s life with a memorial can do so with a contribution to Visiting Nurse Association, at 2414 W. University Drive Suite 200 McKinney, Texas 75071 or Holy Nativity Episcopal Church, at P.O. Box 860467 Plano, Texas 75086.
