He was born to the late William Cropper Thornton and Pansy Elaine (Kilmon) Thornton on February 20, 1926, in Chincoteague, Virginia.
Gene served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. Following the War, he worked for the United States Navy in Chincoteague, Virginia. He graduated from Temple University in 1952 with a degree in business administration.
On June 5, 1952, Gene married Ellen Grace Webendorfor who was the daughter of missionary parents who labored in Bolivia, South America. Ellen died in December 2014, after 62 years of marriage.
Following graduation from Temple University, Gene worked for 3M Corporation in Bristol, Pennsylvania. Five years later he began working for Mobil Oil in Philadelphia. In 1977 he was transferred to Dallas, Texas, and he retired from Exxon-Mobil in 1990.
At the time of his death, Gene was a member of Town North Presbyterian Church in Richardson, Texas.
Gene is survived by two nephews, Tim Thornton and William Thornton.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Town North Presbyterian Church, 1776 North Plano Road, Richardson, Texas, with Rev. David Rogers officiating.
Burial will take place following the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at Plano Mutual Cemetery, 2128 18th Street, Plano, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Town North Presbyterian Church, 1776 N. Plano Road, Richardson, Texas 75081. (Please write “Life Change” on the Memo Line.)
