Allen David Pope Jr

Al graduated from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He proudly served his country in the United States Army for 3 years. While in the Army, he played on the Army basketball team and formed the Cactus Dodger’s sky diving club. After his service in the military, Al worked for Gulf Oil as an Agronomist and eventually went to work in the food and drug industry for Skaggs Albertsons. He was a 32nd degree mason and a Potentate of the Hella Shrine Temple in 1993 where he was a member of the Hella Shrine Clown Unit. Al was always willing to give up his time to lend a hand to others and always brought a smile to their face. He has been everything from Uncle Sam to Master of Ceremonies. Following retirement, Al went back to work as a cashier at Albertsons. Customers knew Al for being the most entertaining cashier and they would wait in his line just to see him even if other lanes were open.

Al was the type of man that everyone loved as soon as they met him. He had a truly contagious gift for making other people smile and laugh. Al was also an incredibly giving man and loved life to the absolute fullest. He enjoyed many wonderful things in life. Some of his many passions through out his life included entertaining his family and friends, piloting hot air balloons, riding his Harley motorcycle, playing the banjo, singing, and raising purebred horses and Weimaraner dogs.

Al will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His wife, Coeriene Pope, who he loved deeply for 38 years, precedes Al in death. His son, Grant Pope, daughter, Kelly Worley, and her husband, Todd, survive him. Al’s memory will also live on through his Grandson Kevin Pope, his Granddaughters Nicole and Madison Worley, as well as his Great Granddaughters Selah and Abi Pope. A visitation will be held at Ted Dickey Funeral Home Friday, March 23, 2012 from 6-8 PM. The funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church of McKinney at 1 PM. The family wishes that in lieu of sending flowers, please send donations to the Shriners Burn Hospital of Galveston.
