Ralph Daniel Smith

Ralph Daniel (Danny) was the firstborn in his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph L. Smith, Jr. He is survived by his mother, Jessie Smith, his brother, Jeff (Charlotte), and his sisters, Karan and Alison. He also enjoyed three nieces, one nephew, and many great-nieces and nephews.

Danny was creative in his own way. In Houston, as a young boy, the neighborhood boys began having kite fights. The goal was to bring opposing kites down. Frustrated in defeat he went home and built a kite twice the size and weight of his store-bought competition, taped razor blades to the batwing tips and tail. He cleaned up at the next meet, until his kite flew away on broken string. He said he should’ve used a heavier line. Danny gave freely when he was flush, invested in his younger siblings and friends.

He attended Belmont Abbey College and later, finished top of his class in lumber-grading school. He worked in various skilled trades from time to time as a mechanic, house painter, lumber grader and boat builder.

Danny was a contentious, Tom Sawyer-ish imp, he touched many, his infectious smile will be missed by those who knew and loved him best.

A memorial gathering is to be arranged.
