He received his Associate Degree from North Greenville in 1968, his Bachelor of Arts from Carson Newman in 1970, his Master's from Clemson in 1974, and his Education Specialist Administration and Supervision in 1989.
In 2010, he was awarded the Personnel Administrator of the year award for Outstanding Leadership Awarded by the Administrators' Division South Carolina Association of School Administrators.
In 2010-2011, he was the winner of the William B. Harley Award Administrator of the year. This award was presented by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.
He had a long and rewarding career in education. He served as a public-school educator for fifty-two years. He began his teaching career in Townville, South Carolina. He then moved to Pickens County and taught grades 3-6. He moved on from teaching advancing to school level administrator. He was hired in Anderson School District Five and retired from there January 12, 2023 as the Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources.
He had a deep love for Edisto Beach and enjoyed vacations there with his family. He collected numerous shells as walked along the beach. He could be easily spotted with his Edisto cap and his Clemson shirt. His favorite hobby was working in his garden that was alive each year with beautiful flowers.
He loved his family and especially liked talking about his two granddaughters, Ellen Blackwell and Olivia Mahaffey, who brought him much laughter and delight. He was proud of them.
Upon moving to Clemson, he and his wife joined First Baptist Church of Clemson. He served on various committees. He was a member of the Good Samaritan Sunday School Class. In addition, he was chosen to become the Deacon of his Sunday Class. When needed, he taught Sunday School.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Mahaffey, of 52 years son, Stuart Mahaffey (Fabianna) of Bluffton South Carolina, daughter Allison Blackwell (Richard) of Seneca South Carolina, Brother Paul Mahaffey (Sandy), of South China Maine, Sister Pam (Carlton) Furr of Concord, North Carolina, Sister Cyndi (David St. John) of Irmo, South Carolina.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to four special ladies that provided care for Mike, Emmie Carnegie, Abbie Morgan, Crystal Gray, and Pauline Benton.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday June 29, 2024, at FIrst Baptist Church of Clemson located at 397 College Ave, Clemson, SC 29631.
A visitation will take place following the service in the church on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers the family as asked to make donation to Clemson Community Care located at 105 Anderson Hwy Clemson SC 29631 or First Baptist Church of Clemson.
