James was born in Greenville, South carolina to the late JD and Essie Thompson. He grew up in Rocky Bottom where he enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends. He was a proud graduate from Parker High School in Greenville, SC. After high school, he served in the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). He worked for Bi-Lo as the market manager for 40 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his family.
James is survived by his wife of 53 years Jan Thompson; his son Chris Thompson; his son Kevin Thompson (Amanda); his daughter Amanda Troyer; and his son Cory Thompson (Corey); his sister Elizabeth Thompson; his granddaughter Sarah Thompson, his grandson Jack Thompson, his granddaughter Madison Troyer, his granddaughter Riley Troyer and his great granddaughter Aspen.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Brenda Ketterman and his sister Karen Harden.
A visitation for James will be held Friday, January 5, 2024 from 10:00 am to 10:45 am at Dillard Memorial Funeral Home, 2402 Gentry Memorial Highway, Pickens, South Carolina 29671. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 am in the chapel. James will be laid to rest with military honors at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
