Jean was born in the Shady Grove Community of Pickens County, a daughter of the late James and Ora Roper Winchester. She operated Porter’s Day Care in Liberty for over 28 years where she helped mold young minds, many of whom were still in contact with her. Jean was a lifelong member of Calumet Baptist Church in Liberty.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law Anita Pinkston (Robert) of Pickens, son-in-law Steve Crisp of Liberty and grandchildren Tara McGowan (Daniel) of Seneca, Kelly Porter of Pickens, David Harris (Tiffany) of Liberty and Reeci Bryant (Josh) of Pickens. Great grandchildren include Amanda Whitehead, Bailey Whitehead, Connor Porter and Asher James Bryant.
In addition to her husband, Jean was also preceded in death by her three children, Susan Porter Pierce and her husband Mike, Kerri Porter Crisp, and James D. “Jimmy” Porter.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday April 21, 2024 in the mausoleum chapel at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Pickens with The Reverend Zachary Golden officiating and a Eulogy by her granddaughter Tara McGowan. The family will receive friends at 1:30 PM prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Pickens County Meals on Wheels, 349 Edgemont Avenue, Liberty, SC 29657.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Interim Hospice especially Jill, Kylie, Zephora, DJ, and Audrey for the care they provided during Jean’s last days. Also, to the medical supply company personnel that went beyond to get us the necessary equipment needed including Clyde, David, B J, Adrian and Jordan. The kindness, love, and prayers from this group was exceptional and beyond our expectations!
The family is at the home of her daughter-in-law, Anita Pinkston.
