Sheila Ann Thomas Lopez, 72, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on May 6, 2019. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 5, 1947 to Frank and Margaret (O’Brien) Thomas. Sheila was a longtime Phoenix resident after her parents moved to the desert shortly after her first birthday.
Sheila was a retired Program Representative with Arizona State Department of Behavioral Health Services. She was a prominent figure in the mental health field having been a cofounder of Survivors United, a drop in center for the mentally ill, in 1988. Sheila mentored many of her peers and encouraged them about the importance of taking medication in order to keep the illness at bay. She worked tirelessly in speaking out against the stigma that was associated with the term “mentally ill”.
Sheila is proceeded in death by her brother Stephen Thomas (Lana) and survived by her sisters Marie Sierra, Michelle Hackwell and Gayle Mueller. She is also survived by her sons Stephen (Monica), Anthony (Kerry) and Daniel (Matthew), grandsons Michael, Anthony, Jeremy, Stephen, Bryan and great-grandson Kaiden.
