Sandra A. Martin, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Sandra, born September 23, 1936, in Amboy, Illinois, was the daughter of Hilda L. Johnston and Clemons Fredrick Schuette.
A woman of remarkable strength, boundless love, and undeniable charisma, Sandra's life was a testament to resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and profession. She attended Sunnyslope High School, where she cultivated lifelong friendships and cherished memories, graduating in 1954. Following her passion for healthcare, Sandra pursued her nursing education at St. Francis School of Nursing in Peoria, Illinois, graduating as president of her class in 1957.
During her nursing career, Sandra met the love of her life, the dashing young sailor David Martin. Their union in 1958 marked the beginning of a remarkable journey, spanning 63 years until David's passing in 2016. Sandra's dedication to nursing was exemplary, serving as a Registered Nurse for an impressive 55 years. She began her career as a pediatric nurse, bringing comfort and care to countless children, before transitioning into geriatric nursing, where her compassion touched the lives of many elderly patients. For 12 years, Sandra served as the Director of Nursing at Eliza Jennings Nursing Home in Cleveland, Ohio, where her leadership and expertise were invaluable.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sandra was known for her vibrant spirit and zest for life. She possessed an innate ability to celebrate life's moments, whether big or small, with her extensive circle of friends and cherished family members.
Sandra is preceded in death by her beloved husband, David, and one daughter, Mary Ann. Her four children survive her: Mary Beth, David (Joanne Martin), Christopher (Laurie Davies), and Alicia (Keith Herron); her ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters are on the way. Her legacy of love and compassion will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
In memory of our mom, the family kindly requests donations to Hospice of the Valley, Dementia Care, and Education Campus to honor Sandra's commitment to compassionate end-of-life care.
Sandra's remarkable life will be celebrated on March 17, 2024, from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., at A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuaries, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory and share stories of her enduring impact. She will be dearly missed but fondly remembered for the love, warmth, and joy she brought into the lives of all who knew her.
