Born in Fond du Lac, WI. On December 26, 1920 the second son of William A. and Bess Mahoney Flynn. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Marion Kelleher, their daughter, Ellen and their son Stephen. Surviving are their sons, Peter and David, daughters Lisa F. Rohrer and Kathryn F. Stinson, six grand children and a sister, Ms. Donald Knowles of Omaha, NB.
His formative years were spent in Albia, Iowa where he enjoyed the freedom of small town living. He was a paper boy, an altar boy, a band boy, a butcher’s boy and a boy scout with an Eagle badge with three palms. In high school besides playing in the band he lettered in track and golf.
He received his pre – med degree from the College of Holy Cross. In 1940 he volunteered in the U.S. Army Reserve and continued his pursuit of a medical degree at Saint Louis University, School of Medicine. Following internship at Milwaukee General Hospital and a tour of duty with the Army Medical Corps where he served at Fitzsimons General Hospital and the station hospital of Camp Carson and later at Fort Riley. He began a residency in Radiology at the University of Iowa, College of Medicine, rising to the rank of Assistant Professor in the Radiology Department.
After another tour of duty with the Army Medical Corps, this time with the 121st Station Hospital in Tajeon, Korea he and his wife moved to Phoenix in 1953. His entire civilian medical career was devoted to the Radiology Department of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. There he may be remembered for having pioneered the Nuclear Medicine Section and later after a fellowship in Neuroradiology at the New York Neurological Institute of Columbia University, for developing the Neuroradiology section of the BNI which he chaired for many years. He was the first Neuroradiologist in Arizona
After 35 years he retired from medicine and continued to enjoy the good life of Arizona with family and friends. Among many memories he cherished the time spent with his son’s Scout Troop on hikes to the Havasupi Village and Mooney Falls, and later on the rim to rim to rim trek of Arizona’s Grand Canyon. He also enjoyed his time and many friends at the Chis Town “Y”. He was a long standing member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Community.
A visitation and Rosary will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Monday April 13, 2015 at A.L. Moore Grimshaw Mortuary 710 West Bethany Home Road Phoenix, AZ. 85013, Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 4715 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ. Tuesday, April 14, 2015, at 10:00 AM. Internment will follow at St. Francis Cemetery next to his ever loving wife and daughter. In lieu of flowers Robert suggested contribution to the Capital Campaign – Saint Francis Xavier Building Fund, 4715 N. Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ. 85012 or the Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E.
