I’m writing this for my sister Lorraine. She’s feeling sad today because it’s the anniversary of our aunt Rachel’s passing. She remembers all the nice things aunt Rachel did for her. One especially stands out, she misses the cards aunt Rachel would send her for her birthday, and all the holidays. Of course she misses aunt Rachel and today especially so.

The only good thing that can be said about 9E’s passing is that she can no longer stop us from talking about how wonderful she was and forever will be. I will always miss coming to visit her and reaching down for the biggest, tightest hugs. I will miss her smiling from the corner during Christmas Time, watching us open the gifts she bought us. I will miss the way she talked about the family and her life before I was born, giving context to our lineage. I will miss going into the backyard and seeing the beautiful garden she created just for the love of it. I will miss everything about her, but she has made herself an absolute icon of the family, and I know we will all keep her memory alive and thriving for the rest of our lives. Rest easy, 9. I’m sure the nail polish selection in Heaven is just unbelievable. 

I was named for Rachel. She was my aunt and godmother. I called her Nini (9E) because I couldn’t pronounce Nína.  A name that me, my sisters, our kids, their kids, and many other family and friends called her until the end. My favorite memories are of helping her do yard work. At the Durango house, she had a never ending battle with gophers.  It was like a game of whack-a-mole that she never won. At the Catalina house, it was the 10ft oleanders that she would tackle a couple of times a year. She would work on them for hours, getting blisters and tanned. I’m sure I got in the way more than I helped but those are memories that I will always cherish.

I worked with Rachel many years at Motor Vehicle Division. So many good memories, she would crack me up and also cover me when i was pregnant working so i could use the bathroom or feeling sick. She gave me a nice gift for my son and my wedding. Thank you Rachel for crossing my path. She will be missed and remembered.

I'm  sharing memories  from when I was a little girl of 7 or 8 and every weekend on Saturday aunt Rachel would go downtown and take me with her. It was exciting for me to go into all the stores and see all the people  walking around downtown. I especially  remember  a short man standing on a corner selling newspapers. He would say " come and get your paper "  Another memory  I have with aunt Rachel is, she was going to college  at  ASU and sometimes  she would take me with her. It must have been a study class because  we sat at a table and I had to be quiet while she wrote in a notebook.  That was fun also. Yes she was loved and I'll  miss her, RIP aunt Rachel
