Mary was born in Rosedale, Mississippi on June 6, 1946 to Joe Stanciel and Everlena Wright. She moved to Phoenix, Arizona with her family in 1956.
Mary attended Dunbar Elementary School, Mary McLeod Bethune middle school and then graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1964. After high school Mary began working for the Motorola Company until she moved to Los Angeles California in 1971. While living in Los Angeles, Mary worked for Bell Sales Clothing Co, Bethlehem Steel and then NDC Liquor Distributors. Mary moved back to her home town of Phoenix AZ in 1988. She found a job as a cashier working for Texaco Star Mart; she made many friends while working there. She eventually gained employment at Shamrock Foods as Forklift Operator where she genuinely enjoyed the people she worked alongside. She then retired from Shamrock in 2005 and relocated to Montgomery Alabama to be near her Daughter and grandchildren.
Mary was also lovingly known by her family as “Aunt May”. She loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren; she enjoyed cooking, watching movies, playing games and fishing which was one of her favorite things to do. Mary loved to fish! Some of her favorite games she played were Dominoes, Spades and Yahtzee, where she was known to be very competitive. Some of her favorite dishes she enjoyed cooking were Spaghetti and neck bones, Fried Chicken, Catfish, Bar B Que and a variety of Mexican dishes the favorite being Steak Picado.
Preceding her in death were Mary’s parents Joe Stanciel and Everlena Wright. Her brothers Johnny Lee, and Leroy Stanciel. Sisters Irene Zollicoffer, Lottie Bell and Velma Gaines.
Mary leaves to cherish her memories Sisters Emma Boss, Willie Lee Craig, Lena Mae Golston (Robert Lee) and Dorothy Golston all of Phoenix, AZ.
Her loving children Leslie Stanciel (Maiya) of Port Orchard Washington, Laura Thompson of Los Angeles California and Julia Jackson (Bill) of Montgomery Alabama. Thirteen Grandchildren: Shannon, Aporsche, Leslie Jr, George Tremaine, Raven, Bryanna, William Jackson III, Janae, Savannah, Alexandria, Sophia, Maliah, and Julliam. 4 Great Grandchildren Isaiah, London, Samaya, and Rain. And a Host of other relatives and friends.
A visition will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at 11:00 am, with funeral service at 1:00 pm, at the Greenwood Memory Lawn Serenity Chapel, 719 North 27th Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona. Arrangements under the direction of Greenwood emory Lawn Mortuary, Phoenix, AZ.
