James William Newman, 90, passed peacefully on May 28, 2020 at home in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born on October 4, 1929 to loving parents Arthur and Martha (Farthing) Newman in Springfield, Illinois. He married the love of his life, Carolyn, on July 14, 1967 in Springfield, Illinois and enjoyed 52 years of marriage.
Jim honorably served his country for 6 years in the United States Navy Submarine Service during the Korean War. He retired in 1986 from US West Telephone Company after 30 years' service.
Jim was interested in everything and had a broad knowledge in all of his interests. He loved all things Arizona and anything connected to the American Indians and studied the different Nations extensively. Jim was the founder of the Perch Base USSVI in Phoenix and was active in its success. He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ, the Masonic Lodge and Shrine in Illinois, and the Knight Templars in Arizona; the American Legion, National Rifle Association, and the Archeological Society to name a few. His interests were photography, reading, traveling, and collecting items that he enjoyed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and great-grandson Braxton T. Balidoy. He is survived by his wife Carolyn (Taylor) Newman; sons James F (wife Darcie); Michael E Lister (wife Beth); daughters Jo Anne Newman; Valerie K Newman; and Sara A Lister (husband Tyler) Waddell. Five grandchildren, Leanne Moore (husband Neil) MacKinnon; Ryan R Moore (wife Stacy); Heather Lister (husband Brandon Ayers); Whitney Lister (husband Jesse Balidoy); Ciarra Newman, and 9 great grandchildren Breagh, Ashlynn, and Kaylee MacKinnon, Rhianna and Carter Moore; Aydan and Siena Ayers; Sedona and Raina Balidoy.
