Colonel Donald “Don” Grant Nolan, Sr., 80, U.S. Army (retired) of Salem, Alabama, entered into rest December 7, 2012. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. (EST) Tuesday December 11th at Auburn Heights Baptist Church in Phenix City with the Reverend Wayne Scarborough officiating, according to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, 3770 Hwy 431 N, Phenix City, Alabama, 36867. Entombment with full military honors will be in the mausoleum at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Nolan was born November 21, 1932 in Columbus, Georgia. He received his Bachelor of Building Construction degree from Auburn University and served his country honorably in the United States Army both on active duty and as a reserve officer with more than 20 years of service. He was past president of the Phenix City Home Builders Association as well as past president of the State of Alabama Home Builders Association, where he also served as National Membership Chairman. Mr. Nolan was awarded many local, state and national awards and honors for his many years of service. He was a home builder in the local area for many years and had a great passion for his profession and served on many boards to further the building industry. Don was known and loved by his fellow builders and associates in the profession locally, throughout the state and nationally. He was a member of the Auburn Heights Baptist Church in Phenix City.
Survivors include his loving wife of 32 years, Sharon Stutts Nolan of Salem, AL., his daughter, Lynda Nolan Wright and husband James of Smiths Station, son, Donald Grant Nolan, Jr. and wife Becky Bradley Nolan of Scottsboro, AL., daughter, Cindy Nolan Kirkland and husband, William of Birmingham, AL., son, Michael Nolan and wife Cherri Ahern Nolan of Orlando, FL., daughter, Jennifer Nolan Soehren and husband Eric of Shorter, AL., son, Christopher Nolan and wife, Christy Meacham Nolan of Smiths Station, AL., daughter, Heather Nolan Davis and husband Donald of Tucson, AZ., brothers, Cleve Bowden and wife Era of Phenix City, Michael Bowden and wife Debbie Mixon Bowden, of Phenix City, grandchildren, James Wright, III, Joshua Wright, Elizabeth Wright, Daniel Nolan, Savannah Nolan Van Horn, Rebecca Nolan Williams, Grant Kirkland, Anna Kirkland, Makayla Nolan, Ethan, Emma and Elise Soehren, Christopher Elijah Nolan, Christian Elizabeth Nolan, and great granddaughter, Isabelle Wright.
The family would like to offer their thanks to their church families who supported them for so long with prayers, cards, calls, hugs and smiles. They also want to thank Dr. Sijid Ahmed and Dr. Jack Tidwell and their staffs for loving and caring for them for the last eight years. Special thanks to Dr. Richard Schwindt and staff for being more like family. Thanks to Dr. Belk Brooks who held a special place in our hearts because of his big heart.
