William (Bill) Purl Wimberley passed away in Georgetown, Texas on June 16, 2015 at the age of 89 after living a full and happy life. He was born June 24, 1925 in Georgetown, Texas, to John Francis Wimberley and Mary Ethel (Sewell) Wimberley. Bill was the 7th of 10 children; five sisters and four brothers, all who have gone before him to their rest.
Bill grew up in and around Austin, Texas. He graduated from Austin High School before joining the U.S. Navy and serving in World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific Islands and received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy on April 29, 1946. After returning from the war, Bill joined the Austin Fire Department and worked there for about 20 years. He bought a grocery store on Tillery Street in Austin, Texas.
While working for the fire department, Bill met and married the love of his life Betty Charlotte Hoker. They were happily married for 59 years and worked together for 30 years their store, Wimberley’s Grocery. They had four children together, Nancy Gayle Wimberley Warren, William Don Wimberley, Thomas Charles Wimberley and Jula Kay Wimberley Tragni.
Bill was previously married to Martha Jane Bradshaw and they had one daughter, Donna Suzanne Wimberley Ford.
Dad moved the family to Pflugerville in 1964 to live the farm life. In 1984, Bill and Betty sold the grocery business and retired to Elgin, Texas. While living in Elgin Bill obtained his Real Estate license and worked in the real estate business. Bill and Betty lived in Elgin, Texas for a number of years before they made their final move together in 1995 to Liberty Hill.
Bill will be greatly missed by his 9 grandchildren whom he loved very much, Rebecca Ford Tucker Hicks, William Ford, Michael Ford, Joseph Warren, Andrew Warren, Erin Warren Evans, William Tragni, Matthew Wimberley, and Charlotte Tragni, his 5 great-grandchildren, Melissa Tucker, Matthew Tucker, Ayden Evans, Ava Evans, and Andrew Evans, 2 great-great grandchildren, Macaylie, Kenslei, sons-in-law Gordon Warren and Frank Tragni and daughter-in-law Janis Brooks.
Bill was a member of Liberty Hill Church of Christ. He had many interests through out his life, in his younger years, he liked to race cars at the racetrack, he loved fishing and going to the gulf coast with family. Bill enjoyed barbequing, brisket being his specialty. He enjoyed gardening, football games and Nascar racing.
