Mary Margaret “M” Ford Major, born 11/06/1926, passed away peacefully at the age of 93, on September 21, 2020 at 9:11 am, at Hunters Lane Memory Care under the care of Magnolia Hospice Care in Austin, TX.
“M” was a native of the Irish Channel in New Orleans, LA, and graduate of Redemptorist High School. She spent the majority of her adult life in Metairie, LA as a wife, mother, homemaker, business partner, avid “African Violet” grower and volunteer at her church and children’s schools. “M” retired after serving 20 years at Avondale Shipyards in Westwego, LA working as an administrative assistant and then moved to Austin, TX. Not long after resettling there, she began a new career at the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality where she worked in the Air Quality Division until reluctantly retiring again after 15+ years of service in 2016 at the amazing age of 89.
“M” is survived by her daughter, Sheila Ann Meyers (husband Dave) of Bogalusa, LA and son, Jay Joseph Major (wife Susie) of Austin, TX; 7 grandchildren (Janette Marie, Robyn Lynn, Dave Edmond, Jr (wife Annmarie), Shayne Jason (wife Ashley), Shannon Nicole (husband Chris), Storm William, and Susan Shaylyn) and a devoted ensemble of nieces and nephews, their spouses and children and an extensive network of very dear friends.
“M” was predeceased by her former husband, Adolph Joseph Major, Jr., her parents Margaret Lamy Ford and William Joseph Ford, her siblings: Rosemary Catherine, William Joseph, Helen Mary (Sister Mary Margaret, SSND), Thomas James and Louis Edward along with many beloved in-laws and her cherished collies, each named “Pal”.
“M" was known for her many treasured relationships with others in all walks of life. In addition, she was genuinely loved by many, many people and will be greatly missed. A memorial “Celebration of M” is being planned with final arrangements pending at this time.
“M” was an avid New Orleans Saints fan and was well known for her love of God and the USA. She wore red, white and blue every Friday since 9/11/01 to honor those whose lives were lost that day. How fitting it is that on the last day of her life, “M” took her last breath at 9:11 am.
Therefore, should you choose to make a donation in the honor of this incredibly patriotic lady, we respectfully ask that you consider making it to the patriotic charity of your choice.
