Martha Oehrlein Johnson, 96, of Austin, Texas, died March 30, 2016, after a brief illness. She was a wife, mother, grandparent, and for 24 years, a food service worker at the Travis State School. Following retirement, she volunteered as a cook for Meals on Wheels for eight years. For the past 26 years she has been a resident of the Parson House Retirement Community in Austin.
Martha was born May 10, 1919, in the community of Beaukiss in Williamson County Texas to Louis and Poldi Oehrlein and grew up in the Coupland area. On March 5, 1937, she married Henry Johnson of Hutto, her husband for 52 years until his death. In their 40's they left the farm, moved to Austin and went to work at the Travis State School, a move that radically changed their family's future for the better.
Also preceding her in death was a daughter, Marie Conn, a son, Louis Johnson, and three brothers. She is survived by a son, Virgil Johnson and grandchildren Darryl Conn, Lynn Gray, Cathy Hale, Dina Church, Andrew Johnson and Amanda Eskridge-Johnson and numerous great- and great-great grandchildren.
She was a person who loved her family deeply. She hoped and prayed for the best for all of them until the very end.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday, April 4, 2016 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home. Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at the Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Michael Johnson, Gary Johnson, Russell Reinhardt, Chris Conn, Kenny Nabors and Wendell Fuqua.
