Joseph Edward Coleman, III departed this life at the age of 76. He passed away peacefully in his home in Georgetown, Texas on August 21, 2021. He experienced a lengthy illness of congestive heart failure which later led to kidney failure. Joseph (a.k.a. June, Ham, Hambone, and Joe) was born on August 6, 1945 in Gilbert, Louisiana. He was the oldest of twelve children born to Joseph and Cynthia Coleman who preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Lucinda McCarthy Coleman; his nine siblings, Elnora Hookfin of Seattle, Washington, Bobbie Brown (David) of Carson, California, Jesse Coleman of Gilbert, Louisiana, Lawrence Edward Coleman (Glenda) of Aurora, Colorado, Marsha Coleman Johnson (Charles) of Carson, California; Shirley Coleman Willis (Nathaniel) of Carson, California, Andy Ray Coleman (Georgia) of Chase, Louisiana, Perry L. Coleman of Los Angeles, California, Charlie L. Coleman of Los Angeles, California.
Joseph was twice married; his first wife, Annie L. Coleman, preceded him in death. He had nine children from his first union: Freddie Howard, Jr. (Judy), Debra Howard (deceased), Willie Mae Young (Kenneth), Gloria Flucas, Cathy Davis, Ronda Alvear (Jesse), Derrick Flucas, Roderick Flucas (deceased), and Raylene Brooks. He later married Lucinda McCarthy and adopted her children as his own. He and Cindy remained married until his sudden death. He is survived by an uncle, a host a nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, grandchildren, relatives, friends, and in-laws.
Joseph enjoyed outdoor life. He also enjoyed spending time with his many friends. He would never shy away from a good game of spades, dominoes, or horseshoes. His hobbies also included gardening; he managed to raise a large garden everything he lived from California to Texas. He enjoyed sharing his produce with family and friends or anyone who requested it.
Joe attended Gilbert Elementary School in Gilbert, Louisiana. He went on to attend Wisner-Gilbert High School where he was drafted into the military before earning his high school diploma. After receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Army, Joe returned to Wisner-Gilbert High School to earn his diploma in 1970. His education did not stop there as he went to obtain further training on occupational and vocational education. He worked for the Metropolitan Transit Authority for over 30 years. He served in various leadership roles throughout his career. After retiring, he relocated in Georgetown, Texas. He continued his love of gardening and keeping an immaculate yard. Joe was also a strong mechanic, a trait passed down to him from his father. After several years of retirement, he decided to return to work. He was hired immediately at a local Wal-Mart where he continued his passion of creating displays, fixing equipment, and assisting management with other adjunct duties. He was a faithful and efficient worker until his death.
Joe had a strong love of bringing family and friends together. He maintained close friendships with family, friends, and classmates throughout his life. He received an everlasting inspiration through maintaining those friendships. He would arrange some of the biggest gatherings and would just enjoy the delight in seeing people conversing and enjoying his barbecue marinated in his special homemade sauce. He made sure that his family, friends, as well as their friends were invited. Everyone was welcome and a fun time was always on his menu.
Joseph Edward Coleman, III was baptized at an early age at New Macedonia Baptist Church under the guidance of the late Reverend L. M. Major. He served in the choir while attending New Macedonia Baptist Church. After leaving Gilbert, Louisiana, he had been affiliated with other churches with the most recent one being Sweet Home Baptist Church in Round Rock, Texas under the guidance of Pastor Donte’ Wright. While attending Sweet Home Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon. Of all things Joe accomplished, becoming a Deacon at Sweet Home, the Pinnacle of Praise, made top of the list. Joe was a dedicated husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend and will greatly be missed. Rest in peace and you’ll always be in our hearts.
