Johnny Eugene Slaughter, Sr., 83, was born to Mr. Albert Slaughter, Sr. and Mrs. Johnnie Mae Franklin on February 14, 1932 in Austin, Texas. He departed this life on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin, Texas.
“Gene”, as he was affectionately called accepted Christ at an early age. He attended L.C. Anderson High School. Gene enlisted in the United States Army of a young age, where he served in Europe as a combat engineer. Upon returning to the States, Gene settled in San Francisco, California and was employed in the oil industry for several years. He enjoyed traveling and playing golf.
In the early 70’s Gene returned to Austin, Texas where he became owner and Administrator of Maggie Johnson Nursing Home for 35 years, upon retirement he enjoyed playing golf, entertaining family and friends, and watching all televised sports.
Gene was preceded in death by both parents, Albert Slaughter Sr., and Johnnie Mae Franklin; brothers Robert (Punchy) Burton, Leroy Franklin; sisters, Elsie Marie Hodge, and Wilma Jean Cartheren.
He leaves to cherish his memory, brothers, Wayne Slaughter of Houston, Texas, and Larry Franklin of Lubbock, Texas; sons Johnny Slaughter Jr. (Gayle), Albert Slaughter, Jr., and Edward Slaughter, all of Austin, Texas and Andrѐ Slaughter (Chantel) of Richmond, California; daughters, Brenda Slaughter of Austin, and Rita Martin (Michael) of Round Rock; a very special granddaughter, Chanel Bridges (Richard) of Austin and her mother, Mimi Bridges (Harris); long-time devoted friend, Ms. Joann Langham of Austin, Texas; several grandchildren, great- grandchildren, great-great grandchildren other family and friends.
Gene loved and was loved by many throughout his life. He was generous to many people, organizations, and charities and will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m., Friday, September 18, 2015 at Cook Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home for a “Celebration of Life" at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Cook Walden Capital Parks Cemetery. Please visit www.cookwaldencapitalparks.com for online tributes.
