Born to Bozie B. and Annie Blundell Wells, Jack was the seventh of eight children, six boys and two girls. Jack attended Lytton Springs school, graduating in 1943 as salutatorian of his high school class. After working that summer the oil fields, he entered the military service. His military career consisted of Basic Training at Ft. Sam Houston reception center, four months as Post Military Police, then he transferred to Guard Detachment, guarding the German Prisoners of War at Ft. Sam transferring from Camp Chaffee, Arkansas to the Ft. Bliss Prisoner of War camp. In early 1945, he was transferred to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, attended and completed Noncommissioned Officers training and was assigned to Engineer Training Battalion cadre. He finished his military career in this position and was honorably separated from the service in April of 1946.
In July of 1946, Jack and Pansy were married in his family home in Lytton Springs after church on Sunday. The couple bundled up their belongings and headed for Austin to begin a marriage that lasted 65 years.
After a year, Jack entered the Postal Service as a temporary, indefinite, part-time, substitute clerk and ended up retiring from the USPS in January 1984 – some 37 years later.
Jack has been affiliated with the Methodist Church from his birth in Lytton Springs until his death as a member of Crestview United Methodist Church in Austin. Thanks to Texas Home Hospice for their care and love for Jack.
Jack is survived by his wife, Pansy; two sons, Alan Wells and David Wells; David’s wife Karen; three grandchildren, Shannon Montanaro and her husband Jon, Michael Wells and his wife Lindsey, and Matthew Wells; two Great-Granddaughters, Ashleigh and Serenity.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Bethany House of Friends or to Crestview United Methodist Church.
