Ida Nell Smith

Ida was born in Austin, TX on July 30, 1930. She married Lawrence Smith in Austin, TX on June 7, 1952. Prior to their marriage, Ida joined the Catholic faith and together, their faith was the strength and bond between them for 50 years. They both believed that their Catholic faith was a gift from God and lived that faith every day. Her deep belief in her faith and strong commitment to her family will continue to be an inspiration to each of us.

Ida’s greatest love was Larry and her greatest joy was her family. She enjoyed having family over, and “Nana’s house” was the center of every celebration. Her children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter were her life and nothing made her happier than being surrounded by family.

Ida was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Austin, TX. She was an active participant and supporter of the Ladies of Charity and served as President for numerous terms. She supported the St. Vincent de Paul Society and spent many hours volunteering at the store – the book section will never be the same without her. Ida always felt that you had to live your faith which included supporting and giving to others.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Lawrence Smith; and survived by four children, Gail Lowe and husband Michael of Colorado Springs, CO, Tony Smith of Shrewsbury, MA, Judy Gresham and husband Bob of San Antonio, TX and Teresa Chappell and husband George of Pflugerville, TX; seven grandchildren, Stacy Patrick, Heather and Lawrence Smith, Ashley and Michael Chappell, Patrick and Leslie Gresham; one great-granddaughter and the light of her life – Ava Grace Patrick; niece Beverly Wood and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 6, 2013; the Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks in Pflugerville, TX.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, February 7, 2013 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 9500 Neenah Avenue, Austin, TX, followed by a rite of committal at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Tony Smith, Lawrence Smith, Bob Gresham, George Chappell, Michael Chappell and Patrick Gresham. Special appreciation to Jeff Patrick for paying tribute to “Nana” with song.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Ladies of Charity of Austin or the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 1327 S. Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78704.
