Doris was born on May 24, 1930, in Adona, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, W.A. Crowder and Lottie McGhee Crowder, sister Rachel Williams, and brothers Dale and Don Crowder. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Kerry Lavan McAlister of Austin, Texas; sister Reba Kathryn Young of Texarkana; son Randall McAlister and wife Lynne of Round Rock, Texas and their children Holly Swift, Kerry McAlister and wife Julie, Ryan McAlister, Sean Adams and wife Carla, Sage and Ian Adams; daughter Jane Ann McAlister Pence and husband Terry of Canyon Lake, Texas and their children Kate Pence Malo and husband Sam, and Jeffrey Pence; one great-grandson Zehn Cadena; and many nieces and nephews.
Doris lived a long, fun-filled life. At Adona High School she graduated as the Valedictorian and also was the high scorer on the basketball team. She was named to the All-State Team her senior year. In 1951, she married Kerry Lavan McAlister and they were married for 63 years. She enjoyed being an Air Force wife until he was discharged in 1953. They moved to San Antonio and Randall and Jane Ann were born. She was a devout Christian and a full-time mother. In 1962, the family moved to Austin. As her children grew older, she enjoyed working in the Credit Department at Montgomery Wards in Capital Plaza and later working at the Amusement Machine Commission. She loved the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns. She especially enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in sports of all kinds. Doris and Lavan spent many years playing golf all over the United States. She kept every scorecard from the 52 golf courses they played together.
Doris was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She will leave a void in our lives, but the memories of her will never go away.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 pm on Friday, August 1, 2014, with funeral services beginning at 1:00 pm at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North IH 35, Pflugerville, Texas. Committal services will follow at Cook-Walden Memorial Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Memorial United Methodist Church of Austin, Texas.
