Dolores Cleo Thorp

Dolores (Dodo) Schumann Thorp joined her Savior and her loved ones in Heaven on September 13, 2022 at the age of 103. She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Alma Schumann; brothers, Otto/Joe, Otis, and Obie Schumann; her sister, Nell McKinney; her husband of 59 years, Marvin Thorp; her daughter, Dianne Franks; her grandson, Andy Edwards; and numerous other beloved family members.

Dolores is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dixie and George Edwards; son-in-law, K Franks and Francesca; grandchildren, Terry Edwards and Denise, Deanne Franks, Amy Elrod and Tommy, Kourtney Levens and Kord, Krys Shoda; great-grandchildren, Monica Arabie and David, Caleb Moore and Laura, Andy Kludy and Katie, Hayden Elrod and Ashley, Toby Edwards, Diana Durkin, Ty Buchholz, Kailey, Kimber, and Kiko Levens; as well as 13 great-great grandchildren and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

Dolores spent the first 92 years of her life in Travis County, Texas. In 2011, she moved to Kerens to live with her loving daughter, Dixie. Even though she was orphaned at age 17 and had to quit school, she always had a positive attitude and a giving spirit. While her two daughters were young, Dolores raised cows, chickens, and pigs. She sewed for the public and made all the girls’ clothes. Later, she worked at JC Penny and kept books for her husband, Marvin. She worked for the Texas State Comptroller’s Office for 23 years and 9 months where she helped write the initial rules for the state sales tax. When any member of the family had a problem, they always ask that she pray for them. And pray she did. We always thought that she had a special pipeline to her Lord’s ear, because when she prayed, He listened.

Dolores (Dodo) loved her family. This was evident in the multitude of family pictures that adorned the walls her home. At first, her family room had a section for each grandchild with pictures marking each year of their life. As the family grew, so did the picture collection with pictures of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. When Dodo moved out of her family home in Manor and to Kerens to live with her daughter, Dixie, all of her photos from Manor were scanned and put into a slideshow that played on her big screen TV in her room. In Kerens, she had all of her Manor photos playing on the TV, but the walls of her room were empty- but not for long. Dodo requested pictures anytime she was visited and all the grandchildren obliged. Soon the walls of her room in Kerens were covered with current photos and Dodo was always ecstatic to receive a new photo.

Dodo also loved playing games. Dodo and her husband, Marvin, would play domino games (dominoes & 42) and card games with their daughters and their sons-in-law. When her grandchildren were old enough, they were taught to play and playing dominoes was also a lesson in math. When there were more than 4 people to play, a second set of dominoes was added and the game switched to 84. Sometimes, there would even be multiple tables of games going at once.

Christmas was a special time at Dodo’s home. Every year, she hosted the family Christmas. Dixie’s family would come to Dodo’s as soon as the school was on winter break and Dianne’s family would come on Christmas Day. When it was time to open presents, everyone sat in the largest room and presents were opened one at a time to prolong the family celebration. When Dodo moved to Kerens, the family Christmas moved with her and the whole family comes to celebrate.

Every summer, grandkids would get to spend a week’s vacation at Dodo’s home. This was a special treat for the grandchildren. One on one time with Dodo and Marv where you could tour the State Capital, eat at Luby’s, swim at Barton Springs, go to the movies, visit Aquarena Springs, go shopping, or just run errands in Manor. Summer in Manor was always a fun time- unless you broke your leg skating LOL.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service beginning at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, September 18, 2022 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, 14501 North Interstate 35 in Pflugerville, Texas 78660. A reception will follow the service at 4:00 p.m. at Pappasito’s Cantina, 6513 North Interstate Highway 35 in Austin, Texas 78752.
