Carl Schomburg, 64, was born at the Bauknight Clinic in Ganado, Texas, on February 6, 1950. He was the third son of Walter and Leola Selby Schomburg. He passed away on June 3, 2014, in Round Rock, Texas.
Carl lived his entire childhood in Ganado, Jackson County, Texas, and served as president of his class all four years of high school. He was an excellent student and received many academic and civic leadership awards. He loved athletics and played many sports. Carl graduated from Ganado High School in 1968, from Wharton County Junior College in 1970 and from the University of Houston in 1972.
Carl began his career at Texas Mill Supply in Galena Park. He moved to Austin in 1977 to work for Robert R. “Bob” Harding, Jr. at Texas Tool & Fasteners, Inc. Bob, Terry Potter and Carl worked together for various entities in the commercial construction supply industry until Carl’s retirement in 2012. He was respected and well-known by everyone – co-worker, customer, and supplier.
Carl married Myra Sue Israel in July, 1975, in Houston, Texas. Myra was a “package deal” with her five-year-old daughter, Rhonda Klekar. He was a wonderful and loving step-father. Carl and Myra built a home in Round Rock in 1978, and their daughter Abigail Renee was born in 1979.
Carl was active his entire life in United Methodist Churches in Ganado, Houston and Round Rock. Carl and Myra began working with the youth of First United Methodist Church of Round Rock (FUMC-RR) in 1982. Carl taught middle and high school Sunday school classes for the rest of his life. Carl loved kids! His passion of teaching and mentoring youth also included coaching his girls in softball. He served on the board of the Round Rock Sertoma Girls’ Softball League for many years. Mission trips with youth and adults allowed him to use his knowledge of tools and construction to empower others to build and improve the lives of others. The trips took him to several states, Mexico and Honduras. Carl also was a fabulous cook and served as the “chief cook” for the United Methodist Men at FUMC-RR and established a weekly breakfast fellowship in 1983. Carl had a sweet, true Tenor voice and contributed to the misbehavior of the Tenor section of the Chancel Choir for more than 30 years.
Carl’s other great passion was salt-water fishing. He made many trips with several groups of friends over the years and introduced his grandsons to salt-water fishing.
Carl was preceded in death by his father, Walter Schomburg, his beloved step-father, Joe Hafernick, and his mother Leola Selby Schomburg Hafernick. He is survived by his wife, Myra Schomburg, step-daughter, Rhonda Klekar, daughter and son-in-law, Abbie and James Wylie, and two treasured grandsons, Jamison and Jayden Wylie. He was also survived by his brothers, Calvin Schomburg (Sharon) and Ralph Schomburg (Dawn Hoyle), and his baby sister, Nelda Hensley (David). He will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was loved by the entire “Israel Family Bush” for almost 39 years.
Family visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church of Round Rock, Building 5, Room 127 on Thursday, June 5 from 5 to 7 PM. A celebration of Carl’s life will be held at the church on Friday, June 6, at 2 PM in the sanctuary. The church is located at 1004 N. Mays, Round Rock, Texas.
