Benita Cooper was a lot of things to a lot of people. She was a teacher, educator, and inspiration for countless students. She was awarded the Teacher of The Year Award as part of the Austin independent School District from which she retired at the age of 61.
To many others, she was a beloved cousin or aunt. Touching and being a part of as many lived as she could. To me, she was and will forever be Mom. Benita was born on August 28, 1951, in Seguin TX. She grew up with her two sisters Deborah and Pauletta. She placed an early emphasis on education being accepted into and then graduating from Texas Southern University with her bachelor's degree to become a teacher. For years her nieces and nephews were her babies.
In 1987 her role changed when her only child was born. She worked extremely hard as a single mother to make sure she provided for me and for us as a family. She supported and made it possible for me to enjoy my childhood and participate in sports and other group activities. She never stopped encouraging me to push myself to be the best me and pursue my goals.
She often said, "I can't teach you how to be a man, but I can teach you how to be a good person. " She was my friend, my support, and my angel. Thank you So much!
I love you Ma.
