Anne trained to be a nurse during WWII and aided many wounded soldiers, both German and Allied. She met the love of her life, Huey Fontenot on his first day of his arrival to Fritzlar in support of the Berlin Airlift. They were immediately attracted to each other and this resulted in their marriage on January 19, 1950 that lasted 64 years until his passing. Their only daughter Linda was born in Germany before Huey's transfer back to the US.
Her arrival to America was met with both joy and hardship. She was proud when she became an American citizen in the early 1950's, but there was hardship too because she and Linda were caught in one of the most destructive tornadoes in Georgian history in 1953. Thankfully neither was hurt but their apartment complex was completely destroyed.
Brighter times were ahead when Huey's next assignment took them to Spain for 5 years. There they were able to reunite with her family and friends on vacations as they travelled in Spain, France, and Germany.
Their next assignments brought them to the midwest, first to Nebraska and then to Illinois. Anne and Huey began their lifelong enjoyment of camping whenever time would allow. She and the family traveled and camped along the way to see her sister in Washington state and to visit his relatives in Louisiana. Huey left on a year-long assignment to Alaska while Linda remained in school in Illinois, and when time came for Huey's military retirement they wanted to relocate nearer his family in Louisiana. Austin was a great choice for them.
Anne and Huey bought their first and only home together in 1967 in North Austin and started the Texas chapter of their lives. Huey worked at the Austin airport and Anne began work in the camera department at Sears. She enjoyed her time at Sears and attended reunion lunches for many years.
When her only grandson Thomas arrived in 1975 she left Sears in order to devote her time to loving him and helping Linda with the childrearing duties. About this time she also started meeting with some local German women several times a year. The group of a dozen or so met at each other's homes and developed into life-long friendships.
In addition to taking care of Thomas, she made time to sew, garden, grow her beautiful bougainvilleas, and take pottery classes. One of her passions became growing African violets and joining the garden club. She became so accomplished she became a judge at local African violet shows.
When her daughter Linda married a man with two children of his own, Kenzie and Jason, she instantly became a grandmother to three. Ultimately she would have three great-grandchildren, Nate, Brelynn, and Trenton along with seven adopted great-grandchildren, Grant, Charlie, Drew, Lucy, Austin, Jackson and Amanda.
Through the years Linda and her husband Marty bought a home in a small town a few miles from Austin and Anne and Huey loved taking their camper there to help with the re-build effort on the old house. Anne at first could not understand why Linda wanted such an old house but she and Huey worked tirelessly to help with the reconstruction. She then infused some of her soul into the old house and grew to enjoy the time spent working on it.
She found time to volunteer each week at Seton NW Medical Center and even engaged Huey to participate. She helped there for over 15 years until she needed to devote more time to caring for her greatest love, Huey. She, as usual, was passionate about caring for her family and became a fixture at the nursing facility where he recuperated from a bad fall he endured near Thanksgiving of 2013. They enjoyed each other's company until he went to be with the Lord in September of 2014. They had had 64 beautiful, caring years together.
Heartsick, of course, she remained in her home for a year, but decided she could use the company of others and moved to a wonderful facility called Buckner Villas just a few blocks from her home. Both the residents and staff took quite a shine to Anne and before long she was attending painting classes, exercise programs, and her not-ever-to-be-missed bingo games. She was proud of her "Be-Wellinaire" award for outstanding engagement in events and inspiration to others.
She was an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her and we can be comforted because her Christian faith insures she is with the Lord in all his glory.
