At the end of September 2021, Arthur Richard Galley played his last round of golf of the year, washed his clubs, and stored them for the winter. Always the accomplished athlete and competitor, we would never have believed that just a few weeks later he would be diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.
After a hard fought battle, filled with effort and grace, Art has left us.
But in leaving us, Art’s legacy of love, loyalty, generosity, and success remains. He always brought out the best in everyone and enriched the lives of those who knew him. This wonderful, fun-loving, and strong man was renowned for his sense of humour. He lived a good life, full of hard work, good wine, delicious food, great conversation, laughter, and learning.
Art was the youngest child of Stella (Ivey) and Garnet Galley and has been predeceased by his four siblings.
Devoted husband to Shirley (Head) (d. 1996) and beloved father of Gary Lawrence (Karen Keitel) and Linda Marie (Ron) Fuller. Proud of his four grandchildren: Mike (Laura), Andrew (Kristen), Allison (Dan), and Rebecca (Chris) and his one great grandson Sonny Arthur Galley.
Art attended Peterborough schools, always maintaining a job from an early age. In his early teens, Art began working at Kesco Electric and using the same determination and work ethic that defined him, he would finish as one of the company’s owners some forty years later.
Art was fortunate to lead a long and active life, well known in the Peterborough sports community as a young athlete – excelling in baseball, lacrosse, and hockey. He took up skiing at age 40 and golf at age 65, never resting as he chased new slopes and fresh greens – finding happiness on both.
In 2001, Sheila Wainwright was lucky enough to meet Art and together they made a home and explored many wonderful places in the world – visiting cities and countries across five continents.
He has been a cherished husband and father. But through all his business achievements, athletic accomplishments, and personal successes, Art’s hallmark was his humble touch, his kind word. His strength of character was displayed every day in how he chose to live his life, and also in how he left it – with courage. Art loving us so deeply and for so long has given us the courage to carry on in his memory. There will be a celebration of Art’s life in the near future.
